Troubleshooting Guide
Learn how to troubleshoot and resolve common issues with the Zillow Data Exporter extension.
Overview
While we strive to make Zillow Data Exporter as reliable as possible, issues can sometimes occur. This guide provides a step-by-step process to help you diagnose and resolve the most common problems. We recommend following these steps before contacting support.
How the Extension Works & Why Issues Happen
Zillow Data Exporter works by reading the structure of the Zillow website to find and extract property data. Because it is directly dependent on Zillow's website, any changes Zillow makes to its site layout can temporarily break the extension.
This is the most common reason for the extension to suddenly stop working. When this happens, we need to release an update to adapt to the new layout.
Step 1: Basic Troubleshooting Checks
Start with these simple steps, as they resolve the majority of issues.
- Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection. Try loading other websites to confirm connectivity. Try running an internet Speedtest to check your connection speed. If the test fails or is very slow, please resolve your internet issues first.
- Check that you are on Zillow.com: The extension is designed to work only on the Zillow website. It will not function on any other site.
- Refresh the Zillow Page: The simplest and most common fix. Zillow pages are complex and may not have loaded completely. A hard refresh (
Cmd+Shift+Ron Mac,Ctrl+Shift+Ron Windows) often solves the problem. - Restart Your Browser: If a refresh doesn't work, completely close and reopen your Chrome browser to clear any temporary issues.
- Ensure the Extension is Pinned & Enabled: Check that the Property Data Labs icon is visible in your browser's toolbar and that the extension is enabled in your Chrome settings (
chrome://extensions).
Step 2: Advanced Troubleshooting
If the basic checks don't help, proceed with these more advanced steps.
Manually Update the Extension
While Chrome typically updates extensions automatically, this process can sometimes be delayed. A pending update is a common cause of problems. You can force an update manually.
The video below walks you through the manual update process.
Manual Update Steps:
- Go to
chrome://extensionsin your browser. - Enable Developer mode using the toggle in the top-right corner.
- A new menu will appear. Click the Update button.
- Once the update is complete, disable Developer mode and restart your browser.
Reinstall the Extension
If a manual update doesn't solve the issue, a fresh installation might be needed.
- Uninstall the extension from
chrome://extensions. - Restart your browser.
- Reinstall the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
Clear Browser Cache
Sometimes, cached data can interfere with the extension's functionality. Clearing your browser cache can help.
- Open Chrome settings and navigate to Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.
- Select Cached images and files (you can also choose to clear cookies, but this will log you out of websites).
- Click Clear data and then restart your browser.
Restart Your Computer
If none of the above steps work, try restarting your computer. This can resolve underlying issues that may be affecting your browser or the extension.
Step 3: Reporting a Bug
If you have tried all the steps above and the extension is still not working, it's likely due to a recent change on Zillow's website that requires a new version of the extension. Please report the issue to our support team.
To help us resolve your issue as quickly as possible, please include the following in your email:
- The full URL of the Zillow page you are trying to export from.
- A clear description of the problem (e.g., "Nothing happens when I click export," "The exported file is empty").
- A screenshot or screen recording of the issue. This is extremely helpful.
- The version number of the Zillow Data Exporter extension you are using.
Our Support Process
When a Zillow site update breaks the extension, our team works quickly to release a patch. This process involves development, testing, and a mandatory review by the Chrome Web Store, which can take 1-3 team days. We appreciate your patience during this time.
